Hi there, fellow education enthusiasts! Welcome to my little corner of the internet where we dive into the exciting world of education, specifically EdTech and how it has turned the tables in the classroom. So, get ready for an insightful journey on the evolution and importance of educational technology.
Picture this: You’re a student back in the day and your teacher wheels in a clunky computer the size of a small car into the classroom. Yep, that was the humble beginnings of EdTech! It all started in the 1960’s along with the civil rights movements, the Vietnam War, and antiwar protests and ... The Flintstones! Yes, EdTech has come a long way since. Nowadays, EdTech is like the cool new kid in the classroom, with its impressive array of digital tools, software apps, and online learning platforms that cater to just about every learning style out there.

But what exactly is EdTech? Well, I must be honest, when EdTech really hit the classrooms, I felt a bit fearsome about it… a bit like how I imagined moviegoers in the 1950’s felt when watching the Sci-Fi Horror, The Blob. Well, like the protagonist in The Blob who was misunderstood EdTech was grossly misunderstood by me but then I realised it is quite simple. It is simply an educational technology that aims to make learning a walk in the ‘virtual’ park for students. From interactive whiteboards that make you feel like an EdTech wiz with every stroke of your inkless stylus to AI systems that know you just as well as your teacher BF, EdTech has it all to make learning and engagement in the curriculum fun!
BUT EdTech is not just about making education fun with all the bells and whistles; it has some serious superpowers … a little like Tom Hiddleston portraying Loki in the Marvel movies. But I digress, back to the awesomeness of EdTech. Edtech is about improving student outcomes, personalising education for students making learning accessible to all, and promoting inclusivity and diversity.

However, like all new educational theories and teaching pedagogies there are always pros and cons so let’s get real and look at some of the complexities and challenges of EdTech. Remember the infamous ‘digital divide”? Yep, not everyone has the same access to technology, and that is a real problem especially when we consider those students sitting in the most remote parts of our huge country… and that’s with the nationwide rollout of NBN! Also, we must keep our data safe, sound, and private, which means privacy is a huge deal in the EdTech world. Oh, and let’s not forget the real superheroes of the classroom – teachers! We are already overwhelmed with the million things we do each day that we are now expected to become EdTech wizardry marvels able to use EdTech tools like we wield total control at a sports carnival filled with excited students and enthusiastic parents cheering frantically from the sidelines. Nobody wants a burnt-out superhero and with that we need to be mindful of what we ask of ourselves and our colleagues and embrace those EdTech solutions that add to our superhero toolkit and do not deplete us from feeling less than the amazing educators we are. Don’t get me wrong, EdTech is the ultimate game-changer for modern classrooms. With EdTech onboard, learning AND teaching is revitalised and becomes a fun game of learning and developing new knowledge and skills.
The future of EdTech is bright. Virtual reality field trips are already a possibility and with ongoing technological advancements will continue to improve. In addition, augmented reality experiences and AI will also continue to rapidly develop and evolve transforming education and classes into wonderful places where access to education for all students truly are all-inclusive and diverse for all students. The possibilities are as endless as the internet itself and this is exciting!
Anyway, I have kept you here long enough. Remember, EdTech is a fancy buzzword; but it is also much more. EdTech is about unlocking the potential of education for generations to come. If you are curious about learning more about EdTech and the future of learning, keep following this blog for more of my insights as I continue to explore the fascinating and sometimes confusing world of EdTech. Until then, happy learning beautiful people!
